pippin-centric timeline

here is a highly biased timeline of the events outlined in the lord of the rings series. these particular entries focus only on those which would concern peregrin took (who else!) along with a few tactical extra entries. all years recorded using the shire reckoning.

1390
peregrin took, son of paladin took II and eglantine banks, is born.

1415
death of thain ferumbras III of the shire, the last of his line. thainship passes to peregrin's father, paladin took II.

1418

23
sam, pippin and frodo depart from bag end and make way to crickhollow.

26 frodo learns of his friends' conspiracy against him in crickhollow. the four hobbits (the party now including merry) leave the shire and enter the old forest. on this particular day, the hobbits are saved from 'old man willow' by tom bombadil.

28 having spent the past night in the house bombadil, the hobbits depart over the barrow downs. merry, pippin and sam are captured and set unconscious by a barrow-wight, frodo calls for bombadil, who again comes and saves the hobbits.

29 the hobbits arrive in bree. pippin nearly gives away the story of bilbo's amazing birthday party disappearance trick, before frodo intercedes with a song about a cow jumping over the moon.

30 the hobbits, now led by the mysterious ranger, strider, leave bree. pippin is scared but tries to appear brave.

the council of elrond takes place. merry and pippin are upset at the day's end when they discover sam will be allowed to go on the journey, but they themselves are expected not to go.

the fellowship enters moria, pippin is transfixed by his curiosity aroused by an open well. in a moment of folly, pippin takes a stone and drops it down the pit, stirring something in the depths of the mines.

fellowship enters lórien.

16 fellowship leaves lórien with generous gifts. merry and pippin each receive 'small silver belts, each with a clasp wrought like a golden flower.'

26 the breaking of the fellowship. boromir is killed guarding merry and pippin. the two hobbits are captured by a host of orcs and are borne swiftly away.

29 merry and pippin escape their orc captors and enter fangorn forest. there, on a small hill, they meet treebeard the ent.

30 disturbed by what the two young hobbits tell of the treachery of saruman, and the outreaching threat of the dark shadow, treebeard decides to call an ent moot to discuss what course of action shall take place. merry and pippin stay with quickbeam the (hasty) ent.

the ent moot ends. it is decided the ents shall storm isengard. treebeard carries merry and pippin during the march toward the ring and tower. by night fall isengard is reached, setting the hobbits down, treebeard joins the attack on isengard.

3 the wrath of the ents sees the destruction of isengard. saruman is imprisoned in the orthanc. merry and pippin after investigating the flotsam and jetsam of battle, are set as gate wardens, awaiting the arrival of the party of gandalf and théoden king of rohan.

5 pippin having been the one to first touch the palantír when it was thrown from the window of the orthanc, is driven to distraction by the thought of its presence. he steals it away from a sleeping gandalf, and looks into it. in the palantír, pippin sees the new fell riders of the sky, and eventually the face of sauron himself. sauron in his haste, asks nothing of pippin, and pippin in return, reveals no important information. a winged nazgûl is spotted above their camp. for his own safety, as well as others', gandalf departs with pippin to minas tirith.

9-14 pippin and gandalf arrive in gondor. pippin meets with the lord steward, denethor II, and swears his fealty to the city. denethor accepts the young hobbit's service. pippin also meets with a guard of the citadel, beregond, and his son bergil.
having sworn loyalty to the city and to the steward, pippin becomes an esquire of denethor's chamber, and is outfitted in the black and silver garb of the citadel.

15 denethor believing the death of his youngest son and the ruin of his city inevitable, enters the silent street, rath dínen, with pippin and six other servants bearing the body of faramir. denethor proposes to burn both he and his son (who yet lives) in a pyre. pippin is granted release from duty, he bids the other servants to light no fire, and begs beregond to leave his post and help save faramir. pippin runs in terror to warn gandalf of the horrible events at hand.
meanwhile, the battle of pelennor takes place and merry helps slay the lord of the nazgûl. pippin discovers his friend later, ailing, alone in the streets of the city.

18 pippin leaves as a soldier of gondor with a host departing from minas tirith.

19-24 host comes to morgal vale, and passes through ithilien to make camp in the desolation of morannon. frodo's cloak and a few other assorted items are presented to the leaders of the host in a bargain, frodo's life for the forfeit of battle. pippin cries out, but the deal for frodo's life is refused.

25 the host is surrounded on slag-hills. pippin falls in battle, but is rescued by gimli. the eagles come to the battlefield. frodo and sam reach the cracks of doom, gollum seizes the ring, and falls into the fires, the ring is destroyed.

the king elessar having been crowned in may, the hobbits finally venture home and on the way stop in rivendell.

staying through bilbo and frodo's birthday (september 22) the hobbits depart rivendell. bilbo gives merry and pippin each a pipe custom made for him by the elves.

30 hearing of things being amiss in the shire from bree, the hobbits hasten their journey home. they arrive at the brandywine river by nightfall where they are denied entry to the shire.

the four hobbits are placed under arrest at frogmorton in the shire.

2 the hobbits come to bywater. meeting with farmer cotton, they learn of the corruption of the shire and that the tooks are locked away defending the great smials. pippin rides away to raise his family, as the other hobbits stay to raise the rest of the shire.

3 the battle of bywater, lead greatly by pippin and merry. saruman is exposed as 'sharkey' and is killed by wormtongue, it is the final stroke of battle. the war of the ring is over.

sam and frodo arrive at the grey havens. right before frodo boards the ship to pass over the sea, merry and pippin arrive. the friends bid farewell to each other. frodo, bilbo and the other ring bearers set sail into the mists and pass away from middle earth.

1427
peregrin took I marries diamond of long cleeve, he is 37 years old, she is 32. samwise is elected mayor of the shire.

1430
at forty years old, peregrin becomes a father. faramir took I is born.

1432
at fifty years old, meriadoc brandybuck, lifelong friend of peregrin, becomes the master of buckland. he is honoured by great gifts bestowed by éomer and éowyn, the lord and lady of rohan.

1434
peregrin's father passes away. at age 44, peregrin becomes 'the took' and thain of the shire. king elessar makes thain, master and mayor counselors of north kingdom.

1455
at the bidding of the mayor, the thain makes fastred (sam's daughter, elanor's husband) warden of westmarch (from the far downs to the tower hills, a piece of land, gifted to the shire, by king elessar).

1432
thain declares both elanor and fastred the wardens of westmarch

1463
when peregrin is 73 years old, his only child, son faramir, marries the the sixth child of samwise gamgee, goldilocks. faramir is a mere 33 and goldilocks only 32.

1484
spring: king éomer calls for the company of master holdwine (meriadoc, now aged 102). the master takes hail and counsels with his close friend the thain. together they give up their offices (faramir adopting the thainship) and ride south over sarn ford to rohan. neither are ever again seen in the shire.
it is said meriadoc came edoras and stayed there until the death of the king that autumn. then both, he and thain peregrin, went to gondor to live what short years they had left of their lives in that realm. when each passed, they were laid in rath dínen, among the great and revered of gondor.

march 1 king elessar passes. in rath dínen, the deathbeds of meriadoc brandybuck and peregrin took were set beside the bed of the king.
after the death of the king, legolas and gimli went to the grey havens and passed over the sea, and went with them the last of the fellowship of the ring who had walked the grounds of middle earth.
