general questions
what be thy name?
bree and silme.
where do you currently reside?
canada.
have you read "the lord of the rings" novels? if so, which is your favourite book and why?
yes and yes! can't choose a favorite though! they're all good!
have you seen the film versions? how many times? why?
many many many times, because peter jackson is our master
and commander. we will sacrifice weevils in his name. when in doubt
we will sacrifice the lesser of two weevils. ^_^
is pippin your favourite character?
silme says: i hate this question. i've never
been able to answer it. bree says: ditto.
book questions
describe how you imagine pippin.
he's funny, a sweet little kid, always been rather
fond of him, outside of the frodo and sam combo, he's probably silme's
favorite hobbit, whereas he comes in a close second for bree following merry.
what was your initial response to pippin's character?
silme: that is so me! bree: yes, yes it is.
what in his character do you like?
can't really say, but his optimism is very endearing.
what do you dislike?
his left big toe. it's evil. but honestly, not a clue.
what do you consider pippin's strongest suit?
the gondorian one! lol... couldn't resist.
what are his weaknesses?
the palantír... duh. (bree says: i really hate questions
like this and if you want a superb answer you are asking the wrong person)
to what degree did pippin's tookish nature play into his leaving the shire? was pippin searching for something when he left, or was it purely to help frodo?
tooks have always been wanderers. they're the adventurers
and warriors of the shire, so naturally, he wouldn't turn down the chance to go.
what purpose did pippin have with the fellowship?
as a wise elf once spoke: "for the last two place
we shall trust to friendship rather than to great wisdom."
what would have happened if he had been left behind? how would he be different? how would the others be different?
merry would have lost it, frodo and sam would have
not made it to mount doom (he distracted sauron with the palantír
incident, although unknowingly) and boromir would have been forced to "pay for it." ^_~
how does the grand adventure change pippin?
he grows up a lot and comes to terms with
things that he never thought would actually happen to them.
was pippin unsure of himself at the beginning of the tale?
they all were because they were all just wee hobbits
living in the shire, not knowing much of the outside world and not
thinking that they were big enough to actually affect the goingson.
does pippin have a hero? who and why?
gandalf. gandalf was like a father to him.
describe how you see pippin's relationship with merry.
they were close when they were young. we're
damn sure of it, but can't explain why. it's just the way they tended
to treat each other that speaks of some history between them.
do you think merry was ever disappointed in his cousin (ie during the palantír incident)?
not disappointed, but in disbelief. he was
probably more disappointed that they were separated because of it.
what do you think gandalf felt towards the young took? what was their relationship?
gandalf genuinely likes pippin, but won't admit it.
do you think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin? why?
kinda, sorta, but only because he appeared
to feel that pippin needed not so much lecture, but guidance.
when the fellowship first meets galadriel it is said, "each had felt he was offered a choice between a shadow of fear that lay ahead, and something he greatly desired: clear before his mind it lay, and to get it he had only to turn aside from the road and leave the quest and the war against sauron and the others." what do you think pippin was offered?
we're thinking that it would be to go home for good.
what do you think boromir represented to pippin?
do you really want to know? *sniggers* honestly
though, he was like an older brother to him, or at least pippin viewed him as such.
how did the death of boromir affect pippin?
it moved him to pledge allegiance to gondor.
why do you think faramir so moved pippin?
he saw something of boromir in him, only something less susceptible to corruption.
what do you think motivated pippin to swear fidelity to gondor?
his admiration of boromir and he felt somewhat the same respect for denethor.
was it appropriate pippin ended up serving denethor, not théoden? why?
pippin wouldn't have bonded with théoden as merry
did. going to the above answer about why he swore fidelity to gondor,
it goes back to his admiration of boromir and his thoughts about
denethor and viewing him in the same aspect to a certain degree.
when pippin was confronted with death during the battle before the black gates, how do you feel he reacted?
he was fairly sure he was going to die, but he
just hoped that he would be somewhat useful before that happened.
how do you imagine pippin as a father?
he would be the type of father that would get into trouble
from his wife for getting the kids all riled up before bedtime.
in the end, what do you feel pippin lost and what did he gain from his journey?
he lost his innocence, as did the others, but he gained
a sense of self confidence that other hobbits do not possess.
favourite scene or quote?
the bath song!
film questions
how do you think pippin was portrayed in the movie?
he was quite close to the book, or at least we feel
that way. it wasn't just the script, but bill had a great grasp
on the character as a whole. to some degree, bill is pippin.
many felt pippin in the film came off as "stupid," do you agree?
not in the slightest. there's a difference between
being stupid and being a well meaning person, but messing things up.
did you enjoy the performance of billy boyd as pippin? how so?
theatrical release, somewhat for scenes being cut out,
but the extended edition made up for it and then some.
favourite scene or quote?
can't pick just one! be fair! :p
if you've seen the movie and read the books
which scene from the books which didn't make it into the film do you miss most?
tom bombadil dammit! and of course, the bath song!
was the pippin of the films accurate to the pippin you imagined?
quite a bit actually. physically we hadn't decided
exactly what he should look like to the lowest detail, but when
we saw billy it seemed right. the characterization is dead on from what we had in our minds.
what do you most look forward to in return of the king?
everything but when the lights come on and it's over.
which scene are you most worried about?
nothing really, because they've done a damn fine job thus far.
if you magically had the chance to change one thing concerning film pippin (be it action, line or trait) what would it be?
the amount he's in the movie. more pippin!!!!
extra
can you think of think of any other questions which would be nice here?
how do you feel about most of the songs (ex: "the
bath song") not making it into the whole of the theatrical release
and only part of the extended edition?
anything to say or ask about this site?
fan-dabi-dozi!
who's another favourite character (from anywhere, not just lotr) of yours, and why?
silme: schmendrick the magician from the
last unicorn because he's hapless but manages to get everything
done in the end... somewhat like pippin really!
bree: raoul duke
from fear and loathing in las vegas, simply because it's hunter
s. thompson's rendition of himself. the book was fab, as way jd's
portrayal of him. i also like dick from rules of attraction, because he's damn hilarious! ^_^
lse says!
oh this entry just made me so happy. it reminds me of long, long ago when i had another site and a survey there. every round with the survey two friends would reply together, i called them the "dynamic duo." for a moment i wondered if you two were not the same duo! sigh. it's like merry and pippin have replied.
i don't even know what to say in my response here i am so tickled pink. weevils! god, i loved that movie. the bath song, indeed and how it was such a darling pippin moment. and boromir and what he represents, i am the biggest pervert, i'm sure i have all ready gleaned. don't get me started on aragorn's sword! ooh ooh! the last unicorn! now that i'm a wooooman... everything has changed (arwen: now that i'm a mooortal, everything has changed...).
thank you so much, fan-dabi-dozi right back at ya guys.
