general questions

what be thy name?
olivia.

where do you currently reside?
fl.

have you read "the lord of the rings" novels? if so, which is your favourite book and why?
yes, umm i would say two towers because there was so much that happened in that book, the chapter "the voice of saruman" was my favorite. also that book introduced treebeard and éowyn, who are also my favorite characters other than pippin and merry. i also like return of the king because of the climax and i like how éowyn and faramir fall in love (how romantic, i have the page the passage is on, marked).

have you seen the film versions? how many times? why?
i have. i saw the fotr 3 times, two towers twice and return of the king once, so far... dvds doesn't count. i saw fotr because my friend wanted to see it and i wasn't really into any the movie and it wasn't until the two towers that i became a fan. i was more of a harry potter person (still am but i do like both. i don't understand the whole rivalry business).

is pippin your favourite character?
yes he is and so are merry, treebeard and éowyn. i think éowyn is a good, strong female character in the books... i don't really like arwen as much.

book questions

describe how you imagine pippin.
i see pippin as a funny hobbit with a good heart. i really love how billy boyd portrays the character. also the bond between merry and pippin is really heart-felt, especially in rotk when both of them are separated from each other and miss each other terribly. .

what was your initial response to pippin's character?
i thought he was funny... and cute (i saw the movie first).

what in his character do you like?
i like his humor and innocence, yet he is willing to do go the distance for his friends. also, he was a cheerful hobbit and merry even thought to himself that he missed pippin's cheerfulness when they were separated.

what do you dislike?
he doesn't want to fight as much as merry, like merry wants to go into battle and pippin is hesitant too.

what do you consider pippin's strongest suit?
his loyalty and cheerfulness.

what are his weaknesses?
his curiosity with the palantír.

to what degree did pippin's tookish nature play into his leaving the shire? was pippin searching for something when he left, or was it purely to help frodo?
umm, i can't really remember why he left the shire to begin with, well (i hate to base it on the movie, but i really can't remember the book), i think he was helping frodo at the time but he didn't know what frodo was doing... i think.

what purpose did pippin have with the fellowship?
i thought he did bring humor and innocence to the fellowship. (i'm sorry i'm basing most of my answers on the movies!!!).

what would have happened if he had been left behind? how would he be different? how would the others be different?
i think he wouldn't be so aware of the lands outside the shire and i think the other hobbits would be a little different, especially merry, because we already saw how he was when he was separated from pippin for a brief period.

how does the grand adventure change pippin?
once again, i think it made him aware of the countries outside the shire and also pippin made some lifelong friends, especially with merry. (i need to reread the trilogy :( )

was pippin unsure of himself at the beginning of the tale?
i'm not sure actually... he probably didn't know what his role was.

does pippin have a hero? who and why?
i think pippin looked up to gandalf and aragorn to protect him and to give him hope.

describe how you see pippin's relationship with merry.
i think they were good friends but the quest brought them closer because they saw and had to deal with things that they would never have dealt with otherwise and i think a quest like that would make a two people (hobbits) closer than ever.

do you think merry was ever disappointed in his cousin (ie during the palantír incident)?
(oh they're cousins! that's right *slaps forehead* please don't hate me) i think he might've been a few times, esp. with the palantír incident because that's when gandalf took him away.

what do you think gandalf felt towards the young took? what was their relationship?
i think gandalf didn't really think highly of pippin as much, since he kept calling him a fool of a took (once again, it was the movie) but he eventually comes to respect pippin. .

do you think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin? why?
i think he was since pippin was the youngest and he was a bit clumsy and such.

when the fellowship first meets galadriel it is said, "each had felt he was offered a choice between a shadow of fear that lay ahead, and something he greatly desired: clear before his mind it lay, and to get it he had only to turn aside from the road and leave the quest and the war against sauron and the others." what do you think pippin was offered?
i think pippin was offered happiness in the shire, free from the fear and war against sauron.

what do you think boromir represented to pippin?
i don't know actually...

how did the death of boromir affect pippin?
well, i think it was shock since boromir died protecting them.

why do you think faramir so moved pippin?
because faramir was brothers with boromir.

what do you think motivated pippin to swear fidelity to gondor?
i think it was to honor boromir.

was it appropriate pippin ended up serving denethor, not théoden? why?
i think so... i can't remember actually... i know merry was with théoden and he was really kind to merry.

when pippin was confronted with death during the battle before the black gates, how do you feel he reacted?
ahhh! i can't remember... who died? i know théoden died... i know he finds merry... crap! umm, well, i think there is always a shock factor involved when dealing with death.

how do you imagine pippin as a father?
a nice and kind one and hopefully not as clumsy.

in the end, what do you feel pippin lost and what did he gain from his journey?
he lost his innocence (even though i kept saying that's what he brought to the quest) but he became more aware of what is outside the shire.

favourite scene or quote?
well, it's not pippin related the quotes (they are about eéowyn and faramir) and favorite scene with pippin is when they meet treebeard, also another quote i like is when tolkien is describing how merry felt and that he missed pippin's cheerfulness.

film questions

how do you think pippin was portrayed in the movie?
since i based all my answers on the movies, i would say he was portrayed very well.

many felt pippin in the film came off as "stupid," do you agree?
not really, yes he was clumsy but there was more to him than that. it was only because those were his memorable scenes.

did you think pippin's character was slighted in the two towers film?
slighted? how so?

favourite scene or quote?
well, any scene with pippin was my fav. but quote wise, it would be "it comes in pints?"

if you've seen the movie and read the books

which scene from the books which didn't make it into the film do you miss most?
the voice of saruman with gandalf and the others confronting saruman and wormtongue.

was the pippin of the films accurate to the pippin you imagined?
well, i would have to say yes since i saw the movies first.

what do you most look forward to in return of the king?
well since i just saw it yesterday, i did look forward to pippin singing the most and also the palantír... i was hoping that was extended a bit and also i wanted to see when éowyn and faramir fall in love.

which scene are you most worried about?
i was concerned with the ending and how jackson was going to end the movie, but i was completely satisfied with the movie.

if you magically had the chance to change one thing concerning film pippin (be it action, line or trait) what would it be?
he would fight more.

extra

can you think of think of any other questions which would be nice here?
ummm not that i know of, this seemed like a test to me.

anything to say or ask about this site?
i like the site just how it is.

who's another favourite character (from anywhere, not just lotr) of yours, and why?
harry potter!!!

lse says!

you're right, olivia, this was a test. ... and you passed! hooray! a million dollars and puppies for you. ah, if you're favourite scene is éowyn and faramir related, please, feel free to share! i love, absolutely love both of them. did your audibly break when you saw their romance didn't make it into the theatrical version? i was sad.
i don't understand the big fight with harry potter and lotr people either. sigh, did rotk teach people nothing? peace man, it's what rocks. let's all love each other, be we hobbit or wizard.
oh! p.s. ha, ha, it was pippin himself who was confronted by death on- OH MY GOD! i wrote the wrong battle. i am an idiot. oh lord- why did no one else notice? the battle before the black gates- not pelennor. good heavens. i'm so ashamed.
