general questions

what be thy name?
linda.

where do you currently reside?
in wagga wagga, new south wales, australia.

have you read "the lord of the rings" novels? if so, which is your favourite book and why?
no, not yet, but after the lotr trilogy films i have now begun to read the hobbit as well as the fellowship of the ring and hope to finish the entire book by the end of the year.

have you seen the film versions? how many times? why?
yes i have seen them and, not enough times yet!!! they really are excellent movies and "the return of the king" was outstanding above all! that truly "sealed the deal."

is pippin your favourite character?
yes! i started off liking legolas (for the obvious reason... yum...) and strider (well done and such a great accent!) but pippin, as a character, has grown on me and "the return of the king" showed exactly why! love him!

book questions

describe how you imagine pippin.
innocent, heart of gold, loyal and deeply courageous even if a bit nervous. a fun companion, intelligent but clumsy (the clumsiness being born of naiveté).

what was your initial response to pippin's character?
i thought he was fun & a bit dopey.

what in his character do you like?
all that i wrote above.

what do you dislike?
nothing to dislike, except that he has a tendency for pinching food from farmer maggot's!

what do you consider pippin's strongest suit?
his innocence - that kind of purity means absolute loyalty and faithfulness to his friends.

what are his weaknesses?
curiosity and a bottomless pit for a stomach!

to what degree did pippin's tookish nature play into his leaving the shire? was pippin searching for something when he left, or was it purely to help frodo?
not sure but helping frodo was done without question. being of took descent just made it easier to leave the shire.

what purpose did pippin have with the fellowship?
well he tried to bring some mushrooms with him.... he he... however one great purpose was to encourage the ents to fight and that made a great difference.

what would have happened if he had been left behind? how would he be different? how would the others be different?
he would have remained quite naive and possibly not known how serious the whole quest was. he would not have been able to comprehend all the adventure nor the changes that would be obvious in the other hobbits' characters. after such a journey, they would all be more serious and certainly more self aware, both of their strengths & weaknesses and they would know exactly what they are capable of.

how does the grand adventure change pippin?
he now has greater sorrow - and may not be quite so easily 'a fool of a took' anymore.

was pippin unsure of himself at the beginning of the tale?
yes i think so. it certainly didn't help his self-confidence when gandalf remonstrated him for his stupidity.

does pippin have a hero? who and why?
don't know this one... perhaps it is merry. pippin looks up to a lot of people, but merry is foremost in his estimation.

describe how you see pippin's relationship with merry.
i got the impression that they were childhood friends simply because they seemed to have that particular kind of relationship (their conversations are similar to such friendships and they are always getting into trouble *together*).

do you think merry was ever disappointed in his cousin (ie during the palantír incident)?
no, but definitely upset. though i think merry was more upset about pippin having to leave for minas tirith

what do you think gandalf felt towards the young took? what was their relationship?
gandalf may have remonstrated pippin but he knew that pippin had a heart of gold. their relationship seems like that of a parent towards a child.

do you think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin? why?
yes, but the cruelty was to be kind. it was important that pippin realized how serious the situation was. and pippin became the better for it.

why do you think faramir so moved pippin?
because he was about to die (it was a suicide mission after all) and yet he did it for his father. i think pippin was also because it was unfair and represented the unfairness of the entire war.

what do you think motivated pippin to swear fidelity to gondor?
in an effort to do something brave for boromir as boromir had done for them.

was it appropriate pippin ended up serving denethor, not théoden? why?
yes, as boromir had tried to save him & merry.

how do you imagine pippin as a father?
loving, calm and protective

in the end, what do you feel pippin lost and what did he gain from his journey?
he certainly lost his naiveté! and some of his innocence was replaced by grief. he found courage where he may not have thought to have any.

favourite scene or quote?
where pippin sings to the steward of gondor. that made me cry. favourite quote is: legolas: "the way is shut. it was made by those who are dead and the dead keep it. the way is shut". aragorn: "i do not fear death!"

film questions

how do you think pippin was portrayed in the movie?
perfectly.

many felt pippin in the film came off as "stupid," do you agree?
no. he came off as sweet and pure. the 'stupidity' came from not knowing evil.

did you think pippin's character was slighted in the two towers film?
no, but i was exceptionally pleased to see his character included more in the return of the king.

favourite scene or quote?
(as above question)
