general questions

what be thy name?
joe.

where do you currently reside?
denmark (northern europe).

have you read "the lord of the rings" novels? if so, which is your favourite book and why?
i've read the first book and tried to read the 2nd a half millions times, but someday i'll make it.

have you seen the film versions? how many times? why?
i have seen the 1st twice in theatre, the 2nd 3 times in theatre and the 3rd two times in one week. =) there is so much passion in these movies and the characters are so real that i can watch the movies all over again and again just to see the characters evolve and mature.

is pippin your favourite character?
he really is. the ever first time i saw him steal the firework i just thought "damn he's just what i hd imagined him to look like." it's also exiting to see him mature through the movies and how he realizes that this journey ain't a trip as if he was go stealing carrots...

book questions

describe how you imagine pippin.
he's very fond of his friends and the shire and doesn't really have a picture of what cruelty or horror is before the journey. very positive, very cherry person.

what was your initial response to pippin's character?
that means?

what in his character do you like?
is very positive way of seeing things... he starts out to be the joy-go-happy type...

what do you dislike?
can't think of anything to dislike, that's why he's my fave character.

what do you consider pippin's strongest suit?
the positive in him. he's the type that could think of how beautiful the view is if sauron was right beside him, but that is also the weakness in him,...

what are his weaknesses?
like when he says "we always have the shire" to merry as treebeard's meeting. he doesn't quite realize how bad things are...

to what degree did pippin's tookish nature play into his leaving the shire? was pippin searching for something when he left, or was it purely to help frodo?
in my opinion i don't think he realized what was going on, but then again he's very grateful and loves his friends...

what purpose did pippin have with the fellowship?
stupidity... lol, well he does things wrong on the wrong places, but he matures as the journey envelope and i don't think merry would have made it this far without him and also the other way around... pippin is too much connected to merry.

what would have happened if he had been left behind? how would he be different? how would the others be different?
well merry wouldn't have made it this far without pippin, (like above) and the other way around

how does the grand adventure change pippin?
well he becomes more mature, more 'life understanding. he gets to know the fact that there is more than the shire and happiness. you can say like he starts as a child who's ready to grow and he grows.

was pippin unsure of himself at the beginning of the tale?
he was afraid of he could make it i'm sure they all were, but he discovers that size doesn't matter.

does pippin have a hero? who and why?
that must be gandalf. he's a sort of god to him, so when he "dies" it's like a father figure is gone. gandalf also helps him getting on track when he's a bit lost if i could put it that way.

describe how you see pippin's relationship with merry.
they have been close from the start... that's my point of view anyway.

do you think merry was ever disappointed in his cousin (ie during the palantír incident)?
no i don't think. i just think that merry sometimes wish that pippin would be a little more careful, that's all.

what do you think gandalf felt towards the young took? what was their relationship?
like i've said he's like a hero to pippin, and gandalf... uhm.. i don't know how he sees pippin... i think he knows that pippin is a strong and more brave than pippin himself knows.

do you think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin? why?
no. i don't. if he were it was meant in a good way.

when the fellowship first meets galadriel it is said, "each had felt he was offered a choice between a shadow of fear that lay ahead, and something he greatly desired: clear before his mind it lay, and to get it he had only to turn aside from the road and leave the quest and the war against sauron and the others." what do you think pippin was offered?
the last...

what do you think boromir represented to pippin?
in the start i do not know, but when boromir fights to the death for the two hobbits (merry, pippin) i think pippin one way feels he have to 'pay back' and honor him.

how did the death of boromir affect pippin?
he maybe sees him more noble after he's dead and thinks he should earn respect to boromir.

why do you think faramir so moved pippin?
because it is boromir's brother...

what do you think motivated pippin to swear fidelity to gondor?
boromir, absolutely. boromir died for him and helping gondor is the smallest thing he could do.

favourite scene or quote?
"it's talking, merry. the tree is talking. don't talk to it, merry! don't encourage it!"

film questions

how do you think pippin was portrayed in the movie?
i felt like first time watching him that that was it. that was just him. "hey, that's how i imagined him to look like..."

many felt pippin in the film came off as "stupid," do you agree?
no, i do not. he's more childish than the other hobbits if you can put it that way.

did you enjoy the performance of billy boyd as pippin? how so?
huh?

favourite scene or quote?
"it's talking, merry. the tree is talking. don't talk to it, merry! don't encourage it!"

if you've seen the movie and read the books

was the pippin of the films accurate to the pippin you imagined?
he was just perfect.

what do you most look forward to in return of the king?
(i have seen it)

which scene are you most worried about?
about the spider... i actually didn't think they could make it that good...

lse says!

ack! yours is the first response given having seen rotk. i am so behind in this survey! die die die evil me. on the "initial response" question, all it was asking was when you were first introduced to the character of pippin, what did you think of him. initial means first. i loved your answer about pippin thinking how great a view is when sauron is standing right next to him. i can just see it! thank you so much!
