he's one of 'em. i love pip and merry's relationship, and faramir just breaks my heart. i think i like too many of the characters, actually...

book questions

describe how you imagine pippin.
i think he's a lot like one of my best friends, matt. innocent, naive, lovable, frustrating, sweet, curious.

what was your initial response to pippin's character?
i liked him immediately.

what in his character do you like?
all the things i already listed.

what do you dislike?
i don't -dislike- anything, though he'd be awfully frustrating sometimes.

what do you consider pippin's strongest suit?
loyalty.

what are his weaknesses?
curiosity.

to what degree did pippin's tookish nature play into his leaving the shire? was pippin searching for something when he left, or was it purely to help frodo?
i think some part of him was searching for something.

what purpose did pippin have with the fellowship?
his presence with boromir and in saving faramir's life. he brought his youth. you can't have all that determination and stodginess on a quest without some mirth.

what would have happened if he had been left behind? how would he be different? how would the others be different?
if he had left behind, it would have been awfully hard on merry, i don't think he would have been so determined at the beginning of the journey without pip there, but really, how can you really guess at that?

how does the grand adventure change pippin?
he grows up, but not in a bad boring adult way.

does pippin have a hero? who and why?
merry! and gandalf! and boromir! and frodo! and... and denethor?... no, not denethor. cackle cackle.

describe how you see pippin's relationship with merry.
that's how matt and i are. loads of fun, lots of adventure and pranks, but he's much more liable to get into serious trouble when he disregard's merry's advice.

do you think merry was ever disappointed in his cousin (ie during the palantír incident)?
ooooohhh yeah. wouldn't you be?

what do you think gandalf felt towards the young took? what was their relationship?
i think he was fond of him, even if he did have a penchant for trouble.

do you think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin? why?
no. he was protecting him.

when the fellowship first meets galadriel it is said, "each had felt he was offered a choice between a shadow of fear that lay ahead, and something he greatly desired: clear before his mind it lay, and to get it he had only to turn aside from the road and leave the quest and the war against sauron and the others." what do you think pippin was offered?
the shire, and good times with his best friends.

what do you think boromir represented to pippin?
father/older brother figure.

how did the death of boromir affect pippin?
oi, i think the loss of boromir was very harsh on pippin. i don't know that anyone he had been that close to had died before.

why do you think faramir so moved pippin?
he saw faramir's devotion and how hard he strove to be boromir for his father's sake, but ultimately could only be himself.

what do you think motivated pippin to swear fidelity to gondor?
his love for boromir.

was it appropriate pippin ended up serving denethor, not théoden? why?
yes, because his path had diverged from merry's in the quest. would it have made sense otherwise?

why do you think pippin later named his son after faramir, not boromir?
because he saw the difference between the two brothers, and was moved more by faramir.

how do you imagine pippin as a father?
he'd be great fun.

favourite scene or quote?
from the movie- "don't talk to it merry, don't encourage it."

was the pippin of the films accurate to the pippin you imagined?
yes.

of course...

dude, was that diamond at the end?
i think so too...

if you magically had the chance to change one thing concerning film pippin (be it action, line or trait) what would it be?
i wouldn't... i couldn't!

the bath song was so i can understand why they didn't... but it gives us something to gripe about!

lse says!

aw man, you can't like too many! the more the merrier right? i myself like, pippin, frodo, sam, faramir, éowyn, bilbo, gollum, merry and galadriel. woo woo.
and too right! i always say, if the the lotr films had been compleatly accurate the the book, what fun would have been left for the audience? such delight may be found in debate and comparison.
