book questions

describe how you imagine pippin.
i see him as a young man with a huge grin on his face. i see him with dark, curly, shoulder length hair and a strong but cute laugh. i see a beautiful man with clear eyes! *sigh* i wanna marry him!

what was your initial response to pippin's character?
awww! what a sweet baby! i wanna give him a hug!

what in his character do you like?
everything. i love his naivety and his inner strength. i love how he's always in a happy mood! he's so optimistic!

what do you dislike?
i dislike his love for smoking and i don't care too much for hairy feet, but i can live with that.

what do you consider pippin's strongest suit?
pippin's inner strength and youth are his strongest suits. he lifts the spirits of those around him with his gift of youthful laughter.

what are his weaknesses?
his weakness is his curiosity. it always gets him in a heap of trouble, but because of this tookish trait his wisdom grew from looking in the palantír.

to what degree did pippin's tookish nature play into his leaving the shire? was pippin searching for something when he left, or was it purely to help frodo?
his nature played to a huge degree. i think he was searching for an understanding of the world outside the shire and of himself while he was helping frodo.

what purpose did pippin have with the fellowship?
elrond saw that pippin had a huge sense of loyalty to frodo. he also saw that his youth would lift the hopes of the fellowship which pip [did]. so there you have it, pippin brought youth and hope to the fellowship which is what they really needed.

what would have happened if he had been left behind? how would he be different? how would the others be different?
i think pippin, knowing what might come to pass, would shut himself off from the shire. i don't think he would've been able to see the shire so happy before the world as he knew it come to an end. i don't think he'd be as happy as he was before he escorted frodo to rivendell. i don't think that he'd have married diamond or if he did, he definitely wouldn't've named his son faramir. if pip hadn't gone with the fellowship, i don't think gandalf would've become saruman. i know that frodo wouldn't have gotten the ring to mt. doom if pippin hadn't looked in the palantír.

how does the grand adventure change pippin?
he becomes stronger, wiser and more heroic. he found out that life isn't a walk in the park.

was pippin unsure of himself at the beginning of the tale?
yes pippin was unsure at the beginning of the journey, but i don't think that he was unsure of himself in the shire. he seemed to love the way his life was going at home, but when they set out to destroy the ring he felt that he was just a piece of luggage. at the end of the journey he proves to himself and the audience that a piece of luggage has its uses.

does pippin have a hero? who and why?
i think pippin does have a hero. i think his hero is his cousin, merry. he looks up to merry and he's been there pip's entire life. merry knows what's what. he's been there and done that, so he leads pippin on the journey of life.

describe how you see pippin's relationship with merry.
merry's been in pippin's life before he was even born. i think that they have been friends pippin's entire life and their bond grew stronger with the journey.

do you think merry was ever disappointed in his cousin (ie during the palantír incident)?
no. i think merry was always supportive of his cousin not matter what he did wrong.

what do you think gandalf felt towards the young took? what was their relationship?
i think gandalf always saw him as naive. their relationship was a student/teacher bond.

do you think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin? why?
i don't think he was too harsh on our hero. i think gandalf was just trying to get the message through pippin's head that sometimes it's best to be silent and to keep your nose out of other people's belongings.

when the fellowship first meets galadriel it is said, "each had felt he was offered a choice between a shadow of fear that lay ahead, and something he greatly desired: clear before his mind it lay, and to get it he had only to turn aside from the road and leave the quest and the war against sauron and the others." what do you think pippin was offered?
i think pippin was offered to go home. he love the shire, but he'd rather be with his cousin. i don't think he'd rather be anywhere else than on the journey though. he seemed to want to help really bad. but i can't help but think that while he was on the journey that he was searching for himself, his true purpose. i think galadriel offered that to him too, but on a much easier road. i don't think that he could've lived taking the easy way out.

what do you think boromir represented to pippin?
boromir represented the loyalty of his friends even though they only knew each other for a short time.

how did the death of boromir affect pippin?
it scared him. it showed to him that the world isn't always happy and beautiful. it really gave him a reality check. it gave him a taste of what he was in for on this journey.

why do you think faramir so moved pippin?
he was sad that faramir had to prove his worth in order to get the love of his own father. i think he felt guilty because he didn't have to go through that. he was loved from the moment he was born and he felt that no one should have to go through that.

what do you think motivated pippin to swear fidelity to gondor?
i think what motivated him was that a soldier of gondor gave his life to ensure pippin's. he felt that he should give his sword to save gondor.

was it appropriate pippin ended up serving denethor, not théoden? why?
yes it was. pippin was connected to denethor through spilt blood whereas he was only in rohan for about a day. it was also pippin's "fault" that boromir was dead.

how do you imagine pippin as a father?
i think that pippin would make an excellent father. my father has a great sense of humor, and i know from experience that it's awesome to play and joke with a dad like that. i don't think pippin would have the heart to yell at faramir because he's so loving that he wouldn't be able to see his son be upset by his own voice. i think that he would play with faramir every minute of every day, and that he'd try to be the best father possible.

in the end, what do you feel pippin lost and what did he gain from his journey?
i think he lost a lot of his naivety. he gained a lot of inner strength and courage. he gained wisdom.

many felt pippin in the film came off as "stupid," do you agree?

did you think pippin's character was slighted in the two towers film?

which scene from the books which didn't make it into the film do you miss most?
the scene where pippin pretends to be gollum! i really love it and it didn't even show up in the extended cut!

was the pippin of the films accurate to the pippin you imagined?
yes. billy boyd as pippin was almost exactly how i pictures him.

what do you most look forward to in return of the king?
well, i was looking forward to the scene where pippin meets the gondorian kids, but that never happened in the movie.

which scene are you most worried about?
although i saw a sneak peek of it, i was nervous about the palantír.

if you magically had the chance to change one thing concerning film pippin (be it action, line or trait) what would it be?
i would've liked it if they made it look as if pippin was the tallest of the hobbits.

extra

can you think of think of any other questions which would be nice here?
if you could say anything to billy about his performance, what would you say?

anything to say or ask about this site?
make the page bigger. i think it should almost take up the whole page, but that's just me. i also think that the icons that open the pictures need to be a bit bigger. on the battle of pelennor fields question can you be a bit more specific? i couldn't fully understand what you were asking.

who's another favourite character (from anywhere, not just lotr) of yours, and why?
kurt wagner from x-men: evolution is another favorite character of mine. i love guys with an accent, pointy ears and a sense of humor. what else can i say?!

lse says!

first: thank you so much for the suggestions. my layouts always end up small here, i don't know why, some sort of freudian problem perhaps? i just get paranoid about small resolutions sometimes i suppose. i know the thumbnails are way terribly small and i can't stand them myself, but truth be told, i think i am too lazy these days to redo them! i'm so sorry though. also, on the pelennor question, yes, i am a moron, that was supposed to say the black gates. GOD BLESS IT. i meant when the troll fell on him. whoa, spoiler there. though, i'm sure you've finished the book by now.
second: wooot! kurt! i think you're the second, wait, maybe third person who likes kurt. i love him! evo is the best show ever. did they ever announce if they were making new episodes?
in other news: har, i always take notes as i go through survey responses and yours read, "don't stop! smoking" which i find humorous. i meant, "don't stop reading!" and yes, smoking is a nasty hobbit.
thanks for the great survey! pippin love to you.
