general questions

what be thy name?
diana, friend!

where do you currently reside?
florida, but my mind often wanders to the shire and dom's bedroom ;)

have you read "the lord of the rings" novels? if so, which is your favourite book and why?
return of the king, definitely. it was a really moving book and even though the characters pledged their loyalties to others, in the end they were most loyal to each other and frodo's cause. for example, merry to rohan and pippin to gondor. also, reading the appendix gave me days of enjoyment. :d

have you seen the film versions? how many times? why?
yes yes! i've seen fotr 5 times, ttt 4 times, and rotk 3 times. i see them mostly so i can cry again, because i like to cry during movies and i get goosebumps from the actor's performances at least every 15 minutes.

is pippin your favourite character?
honestly i can't decide.

book questions

describe how you imagine pippin.
i imagined pippin as a clumsy, hazel eyed, blonde haired hobbit; shorter than the others with wandering eyes and an inquisitive nature. since he was youngest of the four hobbits, i imagined him with the least hair on his feet.

what was your initial response to pippin's character?
i thought pippin was a silly bunch and immediately began to fear for the character's life, hoping he wouldn't be killed off.

what in his character do you like?
his loyalty was absolutely stunning - giving his loyalty to gondor at a moment's notice in replacement for boromir was a very touching moment. his innocence was charming.

what do you dislike?
nothing about the character really, just when people say that merry and pippin are gay. because they aren't. they are best friends and it's their nature to be close - i like that.

what do you consider pippin's strongest suit?
loyalty.

what are his weaknesses?
naive-ness. because he was the youngest of the hobbitses, i got the impression that they felt they always had to look after him and make sure he didn't get into trouble. though the incident with the palantír turned out to be a good thing, it proved how much he let his curiosity get the better of him.

to what degree did pippin's tookish nature play into his leaving the shire? was pippin searching for something when he left, or was it purely to help frodo?
i don't think that pippin was searching for something, i think it was purely to help frodo and tag along with merry. i think this because he was a very content little hobbit who was eager to get back to the shire, only realizing how much danger it was in when merry began explaining it as well to treebeard.

what purpose did pippin have with the fellowship?
pippin provided comic relief most of the time and a soothing reminder of innocence and happiness. he was always the most upbeat and cheerful one, and his innocence many a time brought a smile to my face, as i think it did with his fellow members of the fellowship (example: rivendell).

what would have happened if he had been left behind? how would he be different? how would the others be different?
if pippin had been left behind, the story would be even more serious. he was a crucial character to the story in gondor and with treebeard - without him, merry would have also probably been more reluctant to rouse treebeard to attack isengard and merry probably would have never ridden into battle with éowyn. gandalf, aragorn and the others may not have even known to make minas tirith especially strong if pippin had not looked into the palantír.

how does the grand adventure change pippin?
pippin becomes a lot more aware of middle earth and his surroundings during and after the grand adventure. before he left, he was content to stay in the shire, drink ale and grow old with his best friends. he cared not for the ents, men, elves or dwarves but because of the friendships he made with aragorn, gimli, legolas and faramir and the battles that he fought in, pippin is now more globally aware. he learned about fighting battles, violence, evil and he also learned the good will always triumph over evil when you give it your all for something you care about! :)

was pippin unsure of himself at the beginning of the tale?
i don't think pippin was unsure of himself during the beginning of the tale. if anything, he seemed particularly confident in himself! he had no idea what he was about to go up against, and thought that he only had to go with frodo to rivendell and back.

does pippin have a hero? who and why?
i think pippin does have a hero. other than his best friend, i think faramir is a crucial person in pippin's life. after all, he did name his only son after him! i think faramir meant so much to pippin because while he was in minas tirith, he saw how much faramir's soldiers looked up to him and admired him. pippin witnessed denethor being a downright prick to faramir and was probably extremely impressed at faramir's loyalty to his father even after denethor sent him into a hopeless battle. i think that faramir's loyalty and courage impressed pippin a lot.

describe how you see pippin's relationship with merry.
i see pippin's relationship with merry as purely friends. hobbits are naturally friendly people and they wear their hearts on their sleeves. pippin and merry are obviously very close as friends and know everything about each other, and they don't try to hide it, but i doubt that they ever had a secret tryst or anything of the like.

do you think merry was ever disappointed in his cousin (ie during the palantír incident)?
i think merry was a bit disappointed during the palantír incident, but i think he was also a lot more scared for him than disappointed. he knew that pippin did not understand the severity of his actions and knew that he would be sent away, also knowing that he probably could not follow; which probably scared him horribly to know that he could not be there to protect his cousin any more.

what do you think gandalf felt towards the young took? what was their relationship?
i think gandalf felt that since he was the youngest in the group, he had to be kept in line. he knew about pippin and merry's mischievous and cheeky nature, so i think gandalf also tried to take it upon himself to teach pippin how to become a respectable hobbit and gandalf was almost like a mentor to pippin, especially in gondor.

do you think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin? why?
i think gandalf was particularly hard on pippin, but it was only because he cared about him and wanted to see him grow up rightly and respectable, knowing that he could not get away with anything.

when the fellowship first meets galadriel it is said, "each had felt he was offered a choice between a shadow of fear that lay ahead, and something he greatly desired: clear before his mind it lay, and to get it he had only to turn aside from the road and leave the quest and the war against sauron and the others." what do you think pippin was offered?
i think pippin just wanted to go back to the shire. after all that he had been through already, he probably desperately wanted the peace and security that his home offered him.

what do you think boromir represented to pippin?
in the beginning, pippin might have just thought boromir and arrogant prick, but i'm sure he learned differently later on. boromir's death was the first really big blow to pippin in the war of the ring. it was especially powerful to pippin to watch boromir die because he knew that boromir had died to save him.

how did the death of boromir affect pippin?
i think it was then that boromir learned how serious an adventure he had gotten himself into (not to mention he was also captured by uruk-hai at the moment...). boromir's death really saddened pippin and i think it made pippin realize what a powerful thing it is to be loyal to a certain cause and to give it all you've got.

why do you think faramir so moved pippin?
as i said earlier, i think faramir's courage and loyalty really moved pippin. it helped him to see what he himself could become as well.

what do you think motivated pippin to swear fidelity to gondor?
i think that after boromir's death and stewing over it for a while, pippin tried to put the unpleasant memory out of his head. when he saw someone else mourn for boromir and bring up his name, pippin probably reacted to pure instinct and to repay boromir's loyalty to him.

was it appropriate pippin ended up serving denethor, not théoden? why?
it was appropriate that pippin ended up serving denethor because i think it taught him to step out of his "comfort zone" and to become more independent from always having merry by his side. also, it was appropriate that one of the hobbits, either merry or pippin, try to repay boromir's loyalty in some way.

when pippin was confronted with death during the battle before the black gates, how do you feel he reacted?
when pippin was confronted with death, i think he was pretty much - excuse the expression - scared shitless for a couple seconds. though, upon the memory of frodo, sam, the shire and the rest of his friends, he probably then tried to shove the fear out of his consciousness and give it all he had.

why do you think pippin later named his son after faramir, not boromir?
i think pippin later named his son after faramir because he knew faramir a lot better and may have thought him a stronger person than boromir - faramir, after all, had given up the ring when boromir had attacked frodo to get it.

how do you imagine pippin as a father?
i imagine pippin as a very eager and sincere father, not violent and not an alcoholic one. he was probably constantly taking faramir out to play, feeding him, i think was there to watch him walk and was there to help him say his first words. pippin always wanted to do the best he could and be as sincere as he could and i'm sure he felt the same way about his family too.

in the end, what do you feel pippin lost and what did he gain from his journey?
pippin definitely lost a lot of his innocence during battle, but he also gained a lot of confidence and self-awareness for himself at the same time.

favourite scene or quote?
the scouring of the shire really amused me, because pippin now considered himself fully capable of anything and saw those who had taken over the shire as mere annoyances compared to what he had faced earlier.

film questions

how do you think pippin was portrayed in the movie?
i think pippin was portrayed on the mark. billy did a fantastic job in portraying one of my favorite characters, just how i imagined him.

many felt pippin in the film came off as "stupid," do you agree?
no! i think pippin was a very innocent and naive character, and these qualities can sometimes come off as "stupid" but i saw what could also be seen as "stupidity" as innocence and curiosity.

did you enjoy the performance of billy boyd as pippin? how so?
i really enjoyed billy's performance. i adore scottish accents and billy's eyes showed a lot of wonder, amazement and awe a lot of the time - just like how i thought pippin would.

did you think pippin's character was slighted in the two towers film?
pippin's character was slighted, maybe a bit, in ttt, to make room for merry. merry understood the severity of the war of the ring before pippin did, so naturally he would be the one to explain to and get more upset at the ents.

how did you feel about pippin's enlarged role in rotk?
i was thrilled to see pippin's enlarged role in rotk! his singing part may not have been exactly to the book, but it definitely added to the emotion. rotk also went farther into pippin's feelings and what he was thinking while everything was going on around him, which i thought was really cool to see.

favourite scene or quote?
"oh, that's nice! ash on my tomato!" --on weathertop in the background.

if you've seen the movie and read the books

which scene from the books which didn't make it into the film do you miss most?
the scouring of the shire, definitely. i was really looking forward to seeing the impatient hobbits returning and kicking saruman's arse.

was the pippin of the films accurate to the pippin you imagined?
most definitely.

how did you feel about pippin not having his troll felling moment? did he prove himself otherwise?
i was fine with pippin not having his troll moment. lighting the beacons of hope definitely made up for it in my book. ^_^

dude, was that diamond at the end?
dude, i hope not. i always imagined her to look a lot like rosie, except with red hair.

if you magically had the chance to change one thing concerning film pippin (be it action, line or trait) what would it be?
it would be the part where pippin accidentally knocked the helmet and carcass down the tunnel in moria. i know it was in the story, but in the film it was funny but was probably the only moment where pippin looked really, really stupid.

extra

can you think of think of any other questions which would be nice here?
yes! "what kind of relationship did pippin have with frodo?" "do you think pippin would have wanted to go with frodo to mount doom, given the option of following him or staying with aragorn and legolas?"

anything to say or ask about this site?
your site is beautiful. it is definitely one in a million, and i can tell that you care very much about pippin and not just the actor who portrays him. i wish i could glomp you, but alas, i'm just typing now.

who's another favourite character (from anywhere, not just lotr) of yours, and why?
lily evans from harry potter. before i got into lotr, she was my only hero in the world really. she was always good in school, a pure role model, faithful to her husband, married young, had red hair (like me!) and died protecting her son. no, i think frodo was. i really don't know why, it's just an instinct at 2:20 in the morning.

guest questions

do you think pippin was tolkien's favorite character? why or why not?
no, i think frodo was. i really don't know why, it's just an instinct at 2:20 in the morning.

if you could say anything to billy about his performance, what would you say?
billy's accent is hawt.

how do you feel about most of the songs (ex: "the bath song") not making it into the whole of the theatrical release and only part of the extended edition?
uh-oh. i've never heard "the bath song" before.

how would you imagine pippin felt about the marriage of his son faramir to sam's daughter goldilocks?
i imagine pippin was extremely amused and proud of his son. i think he was also proud that he would be related to one of the most prestigious and honorable hobbits in all of hobbiton!

do you consider pippin a hero?
yes, i consider pippin a hero. in a world where everyone was a waist taller than him, he managed to save many people's lives, including one from almost burning to death (that would be faramir).

lse says!

and here i thought you were talking about elvis in that last answer of yours, not faramir. har har. oh where to start? this survey has been one of the most fun i have had in a long while. glomp? me? why, i'm all a flutter. never has a survey taker wanted to glomp me before. i'm not even certain what the nature of a glomp is. i imagine to be not unlike what i like to do when i find ice cream.
i suppose i should cover the very important items before we launch on into things. first, thank you for punctuating. i can't even tell you how many people don't anymore. anyone reading this who plans on taking the survey, save my wrists, type your periods. second, red hair? I HAVE RED HAIR. we are so awesome. mine is an auburn sort of red, not the orange strawberry blonde sort and i am o-nauw-ter-rawl. you?
this latter important item relates amazingly enough to the diamond question. you imagined diamond with red hair? dude. so did i. her having red hair has nothing to do with the fact i have red hair either, i swear. excuse me while i fan myself. no! i just thought it would have to be one fiery lass who tamed the famed took and what better way to visually convey a fiery persona than with a fiery shock of hair?
your mind is in dom's room? does he know? my mind is often found in early 1900's new york.
pippin, the young hobbit with smooth feet. so, in hobbit world is foot hair like facial hair with males?
oh my god, thank you. you finally gave the answer i was hoping for with pippin serving denethor question. i too thought it apropos the silly took would serve the severe leader, whereas merry, the stoic hobbit got the warmer, kind leader. being with denny, taught pippin seriousness, fast. good.
you kid. the bath song? sure you know it, look it up in fotr or in the quote section here. pippin takes a bath and splashes water, it is too cute for words.
ha, ha, lily evans. have you ever seen the show "x-men evolution"? i swear jean grey on that show is lily evans.
anyhow, yes, thank you for your lovely survey!
