who is the fairest?

does anyone else find it just fascinating, tolkien's work is so incredibly detailed, yet so vague? you know all there is to know about hobbits, but is there ever really a description of frodo?
leave it to the imagination, what a true master can do.
pippin was one such character who was lacking incredibly in ye olde physical description department. besides the fact he looks like a boy of 10 summers or so from a distance, what else are we given to know? a whole bunch apparently, but in deepest secret.
do you know of the novel series "the history of middle earth"? well in one of the last books there is a chapter from rotk which was at the last moment discarded.
it takes place after all the events of ring war. sam is at home with his children reading from the red book. sam's young sons merry and pippin take to discussing their namesakes, and in the process give an excellent description of pippin (the first).

'well dear,' said sam, 'it grew once, because i saw it with my own eyes.'
'does it grow there still, daddy?'
'i don't see why it shouldn't i've never been on my travels again, you know, having you young folk to mind, regular ragtag and bobtail old saruman would have called it, but mr. merry and mr. pippin they've been south more than once for they sort of belong there too now.'
'and haven't they grown big?' said merry, 'i wish i could grow big like mr. meriadoc of buckland, he's the biggest hobbit that ever was, bigger than brandobras.'
'not bigger than mister peregrin of tookland' said pippin 'and he's got hair that's almost golden. is he prince peregrin away down south in the stone city dad?'
'well, he's never said so,' said sam 'but he's highly thought of, that i know.'

highly thought of indeed. hair that's almost golden? woof.
