you'd think if you had made it to this site, you'd
know who pippin is- but one never knows! so here
are the very most basic elements of pippin's
character.
peregrin took I, or pippin, as he is universally known
by all,
was the youngest of the nine companions who set out as
the fellowship of the ring. at only twenty-eight he was
very young indeed, having not even "come of age" as a
hobbit.
impetuous, curious, insatiably cheerful, there was
always some doubt about him being suited for the
mission of aiding the destruction of the ring.
throughout the early stages of his great journey his
actions only fuel other people's misgivings about his
character.
at many times his youthful follies nearly proved disastrous
(dropping stones in wells, stealing palantírs).
but in the end, it is evident he has grown to become a
very capable, clever and brave hobbit. a compleatly different
person from the young lad who on the first
steps of the journey wanted sam to draw hot bath water and
serve breakfast!
pippin was the best friend and cousin of meriadoc brandybuck.
together they were captured separated from the rest of the fellowship
by an orc host at parth galen. in a moment of
ingenuity, pippin was able to loose his rope bonds and
drop his elven cloak clasp for the remaining fellowship to
discover. once merry and pippin escaped their captors, they fled
into fangorn forest, where they met treebeard the ent
and became the integral
force in instigating the ents' wrath against isengard.
also notable, pippin stole away the palantír and gazed
into it, coming face to face with the dark lord himself.
pippin went on to become an esquire of denethor, steward of gondor, and
eventually a soldier and knight serving gondor.
while in gondor, he became the chief reason prince faramir
was not burned to death by his father. in the last days of the
great battle, pippin left with a host of men to serve his time
as a soldier of the city. while at this last great
battle pippin also saved beregond, a friend
and fellow soldier.
once back home in the shire, he and merry again were leaders,
and mustered the shire
to oust the ruffians who had taken over.
pippin was the youngest child and only son of the thain of the shire.
he inherited the title 'thain' himself some thirteen years
after his initial journey from the shire. as head of his family
and thain of the shire, pippin collected historical documents
concerning the history of númenor, its downfall and its exiles
thereafter. these documents were kept in a great library at great
smials (the ancestral home of the tooks), which became the only place such materials could be found in later days.
pippin throughout the rest of his life kept a close relationship with his
connections in gondor, as did merry with rohan. in 1484 sr, when pippin was 94
years old, he retired from the thainship and rode off with merry to the
southern kingdoms. neither were again seen in the shire.
it is said however, when both passed away, they were laid
in rath dínen, the silent street, among the revered of gondor, and that later,
when king elessar too passed,
both the beds of merry and pippin were moved and set beside the king's to rest.
